Wild Yam Extract Online Guide

Wild Yam extract or Wild-Yam root is not a new herbal medicine. It had been used for thousands of years by ancient Mayans and Aztecs and later, its healing properties were later used to relieve pain by early American colonists as well as Native Americans.

It is a plant that is native to North and Central America but is now grown commercially in other parts of the world as well. Its popularity has now made it an attractive alternative as an herbal aid as hormone replacement therapy for female menopausal symptoms.

However, some researchers say these claims are dubious. They do have a point in that there is scanty research data to confirm its claims as a female aid for most of its claims are anecdotal. Nevertheless, bear in mind that the Western medical establishment has almost always demonized herbal medicines.

Herbal pioneers such as Dr. John Christopher and modern-day naturopaths have used it and assert its power. In addition, even traditionally trained biochemists and microbiologists have verified its efficacy.

How Wild Yam Root Can Help You

So, what are the benefits of Wild Yam extract? Wild Yam root is used mostly as a PMS (pre-mentrual syndrome) aid in helping relieve menopausal problems and symptoms. Wild Yam is rich in a compound called diosgenin that allows it to actually imitate hormones like progesterone, which help it to rectify and balance hormonal imbalances in the female system. This is not all. In his herbal classic, School of Natural Healing, Dr. Christopher writes,
"Wild Yam is considered one of the best anti-catarrhal agents. It has been proven very valuable in pulmonary and catarrhal conditions. As a stimulant, relaxant, and antispasmodic, it is beneficial in all cases of nervous excitability. It relaxes the muscular fibers, soothes the nerves, and gives positive relief from pains, especially those associated with bilous colic, gall stones, and uterus. It is of great value in nervousness, restlessness, nausea, and pains that are common to pregnancy. It has a potent tonic effect on the uterus when taken throughout the period of pregnancy. It is excellent for relieving cramps during pregnancy (especially during the latter stages), and will greatly assist in preventing a miscarriage. It extract relieves flatulence of the stomach and bowels, and soothes any abdominal and intestinal irritations and spasms."

Wild Yam Extract Precautions

Wild Yam extract appears to be a very safe herbal medicine remedy, however, pregnant women should avoid using Wild Yam root. Furthermore, high doses can cause diarrhea and nausea. (Be advised these conditions are almost always present when such an event occurs.) At this time, there are no known drug or other nutrient problems with Wild-Yam extract.

Nevertheless, use with caution. Herbal compounds are powerful and should be used with caution and care. Lastly, when taking Wild-Yam as a supplement, take it with food as this decreases the risk of stomach discomfort.

How To Choose A Wild-Yam Extract Supplement

Finding quality supplements is difficult as there are so many dishonest companies out there literally selling hundreds and hundreds of supplements of all kinds and varieties. In order to make as informed a decision as possible, we recommend the following criteria, based on our own experience, that can help you save money as well as get the best supplement possible. Here's what to look for:

1. The supplements should be produced at pharmaceutical standard GMP registered facilities. Facilities that are GMP registered comply with the most rigid standards so as to minimize the possibility of product contaminants. (These are the same standards pharmaceutical companies in the United States are required to operate under as mandated by the FDA.) Nutritional supplements are not regulated by FDA and as such fraud is rampant with many so-called supplements containing contaminants with 1 in 5 not having the ingredients as proclaimed on the label!

2. When choosing a herbal supplement, make sure it's selected from standardized extracts. This is where the active ingredients potency resides. It's expensive to do so which is why many companies don't use them.

3. Look for tablets with enteric coating as this inert substance protects the vitamins from being lost in the gastric acids. Enteric coating protects the vitamins until they can dissolve in the upper intestine where they are then assimilated into the blood stream.

4. Take the vitamin or mineral of choice, in this case potassium citrate, with other vitamins and minerals as they are interdependent in their biochemistry. Take it with a full spectrum of other nutrients for maximum efficacy.
