Pantothenic Acid Info

Pantothenic Acid uses are many and varied. In fact the root meaning of the word Pantothenic is "panthos" which in Greek actually means "everywhere."

But what is pantothenic acid? What about pantothenic acid deficiency?

What foods is it found in? How can you choose a good, quality pantothenic acid supplement?

This page is designed to answer those questions.

Pantothenic Acid Uses

First off, one of the chief Pantothenic Acid uses or characteristics is that pantothenic acid is also vitamin B5. The name B5 is more recognizable than the term pantothenic acid but they are synonymous and the same thing. Pantothenic Acid is a water-soluble vitamin that must be derived from the food we eat or from supplementation for the body cannot produce it on its own.

Pantothenic Acid works mainly in the adrenal glands to produce cellular energy, plus it helps with the absorption of other nutrients in the digestive tract, it helps keep the skin healthy, helps the immune system protect the body from infection, and helps keep one's nerves calm as well.

What is Pantothenic Acid & Its Importance

Pantothenic acid also helps to produce numerous enzymes so as to maintain critical communication between the central nervous system and the brain. In its most basic form, pantothenic acid is a complementary agent necessary for the metabolism of foods by working with other nutrients and biological processes to release energy from the food we intake.

Needless, to say it is a critical nutrient that is needed on a daily basis.

Pantothenic Acid Uses & Functions

What are the key pantothenic acid uses and/or functions? They are as follows:
  • It helps manage stress by helping adrenal glands to produce stress hormones during times of stress.
  • It helps fight chronic fatigue syndrome
  • It seems to be a necessary agent in preventing migraines by participating in the production of the brain chemical serotonin.
  • Helps lessen withdrawal symptoms from alcohol and tobacco.
  • Helps control cholesterol levels. Pantothenic acid is converted into a chemical called pantethine. This appears to lower the low density lipins (LDL -- the bad cholesterol) in the blood while simultaneously increasing HDL cholesterol levels. The end effect? It helps prevent heart disease, or at least slow its progression.
  • Helps reduce allergy symptoms, including asthmatic reactions.
  • Limits heartburn. When taken with choline and thiamin -- two other B vitamins -- it helps to soothe the pain of heartburn.

Other Pantothenic acid uses? It has a role in many other ailment resolution. Some of the more notable ones include lowering blood pressure, helping with reducing aging signs, helping with PMS, Parkinson's disease, alleviating muscular cramps associated with pregnancy or alcoholism, improving athletic performance, lessening hyperactivity, helping insomnia, and helping with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Pantothenic acid uses are many and varied. Now perhaps you can see why it earned the name Panthothenic Acid as it truly has applicability in many functions and conditions.

Side Effects of Pantothenic Acid Deficiency

Pantothenic acid deficiency is quite rare in human beings as it is in so many foods. However, in order to get the therapeutic advantages of pantothenic acid, higher doses may be required. Nutritionists and doctors say those most susceptible to a pantothenic acid deficiency include alcoholics and diabetics. Symptoms of pantothenic acid deficiency are irritability, constipation, numbness in hands and feet.

As always, consult with your doctor before beginning any supplement program -- especially pregnant and/or nursing women. In addition, be advised that B5 supplementation may interact with prescription medication. Remember, as Confucius once is purported to have said, "The cautious seldom err."

How To Choose A Quality pantothenic Acid Supplement

Finding quality supplements is difficult as there are so many dishonest companies out there literally selling hundreds and hundreds of supplements of all kinds and varieties. In order to make as informed a decision as possible, we recommend the following criteria, based on our own experience, that can help you save money as well as get the best supplement possible. Here's what to look for:

1. The supplements should be produced at pharmaceutical standard GMP registered facilities. Facilities that are GMP registered comply with the strictest and rigid standards to minimize the possibility of contaminants. These are the same standards pharmaceutical companies are required to operate under as mandated by the FDA. Nutritional supplements are not regulated by FDA and as such fraud is rampant with many so-called supplements containing contaminants with 1 in 5 not having the ingredients as proclaimed on the label!

2. Ensure the supplement manufacturer has a Certificate of Analysis (COA) on file for review by you the customer thus confirming the potency of the herbal ingredients listed on the label.

3. Ideally, make sure the supplement does not contain any fillers or additives such as sucrose (sugar), starch, gluten, silica (sand) or any other artificial colors, dyes, or flavors.

4. Look for tablets with enteric coating as this inert substance protects the vitamins from being lost in the gastric acids. Enteric coating protects the vitamins until they can dissolve in the upper intestine where they are then assimilated into the blood stream.

5. Take the vitamin or mineral of choice, in this case Pantothenic Acid, with the other B complex vitamins as they are interdependent in their biochemistry. Take it with a full spectrum of other nutrients for maximum efficacy.
