N-Acetylcysteine

N-Acetylcysteine is a compound that is produced by the body. It is also known by many other names including, NAC or N-Acetyl Cysteine. It is actually a form of the amino acid cysteine and as it amplifies the body's production of the enzyme glutathione, it is therefore one of the body's natural and very powerful antioxidants.

This is important as many studies show that low glutathione levels are related to conditions of the immune system.

Benefits of NAC or N-Acetyl Cysteine

N-acetyl cysteine has a couple of core functions in the body one of which has been mentioned -- it's a powerhouse antioxidant. What does this mean? Free radical, oxidizing molecules roam throughout the body and cause cellular damage thus causing aging and some scientists say also contribute to many degenerative diseases like heart disease, cancer, and Parkinson's disease. Let's discuss some of its other capabilities:
  • NAC or n-acetyl cysteine lessens the risk of cancer by countering environmental toxins. Theoretically, therefore, it has a role to play in preventing cancer. However, it is a known counter environmental toxins by promoting toxins' excretions through the liver, including, carbon monoxide, alcohol, and chloroform -- even microorganisms like afatoxin and eschicheria coli.
  • N-Acetylcysteine also delays macular degeneration and cataracts by boosting antioxidant activity in the eye's lens and macula.
  • N-acetylcysteine lessens flu symptoms by thinning mucus -- in fact, this was its main purpose for many years as it served as a mucolytic (mucus dissolving agent).
  • NAC or n-acetyl cysteine also helps the immune system in that it inhibits or lessens kidney damage and helps the liver in its job of eliminating the toxins previously talked about. It even supports the proper function of T cells, B cells, phagocytes, which are critical to HIV and pneumonia patients.
  • Lessens progression of multiple sclerosis.
Many inquire about N-acetyl cysteine diabetes information. At this point in time, research indicates n-acetyl cysteine hold promise with diabetic neuropathy, but with other neuro-degenerative conditions as well including multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer's disease. More studies need to be conducted, however, so please don't canonize this information yet.

NAC or N-Acetyl Cysteine Precautions & Tips

NAC or n-acetyl cysteine for the majority of ailments taking 500 mg three times a day is what doctor's recommend. If you use a n-acetylcysteine supplement for more than a month, make sure you start taking an amino acid supplement with it. Ideally, the n-acetylcysteine should already have amino acids in it. Also, make sure copper and zinc are in the supplement too.

If pregnant and/or nursing, consult with your doctor before beginning any supplementation. If you're taking any OTC medication, also consult with your doctor first before taking any supplements. Follow recommended dosages. NAC or N-Acetyl Cysteine is most effective when taken on an empty stomach.

There are no side effects of NAC as long as the recommended dosage is taken. High doses may, however, be manifested by vomiting and a rash with a fever and stomach upset. How much should you take if you don't have any medical problems related to n-acetylcysteine deficiency? Doctors recommend 30 to 50 mgs a day to be safe..

NAC or N-Acetyl Cysteine Supplements

Here's what to look for: 1. The supplements should be produced at pharmaceutical standard GMP registered facilities. Facilities that are GMP registered comply with the most rigid standards so as to minimize the possibility of product contaminants. (These are the same standards pharmaceutical companies in the United States are required to operate under as mandated by the FDA.) Nutritional supplements are not regulated by FDA and as such fraud is rampant with many so-called supplements containing contaminants with 1 in 5 not having the ingredients as proclaimed on the label!

2. Ideally, make sure the supplement does not contain any fillers or additives such as sucrose (sugar), starch, gluten, silica (sand) or any other artificial colors, dyes, or flavors.

3. Look for tablets with enteric coating as this inert substance protects the vitamins from being lost in the gastric acids. Enteric coating protects the vitamins until they can dissolve in the upper intestine where they are then assimilated into the blood stream.

4. Regular supplementation of N-acetylcysteine increases the urinary excretion of copper. Ideally, make sure the NAC or n-acetyl cysteine supplement has both zinc and copper in it.

N-Acetylcysteine Supplement

After much research, I've come across a company that offers GMP compliant products, and meets all the above criteria. Their scientifically formulated multivitamin supplement product not only has n-acetylcysteine but also copper and zinc and amino acids.

In addition, this vitamin supplement has a full spectrum of vitamins, minerals, trace and specialty minerals, herbal extracts, and nutrient-rich enzymes (over 80). I've been taking this supplement for more than a year now and am very pleased with the results.

I've experience greater energy, better sleep, better skin tone, increased cognitive functions, and overall better health.

I hope this N-Acetylcysteine web page has been useful to you.

Yours in health, hope, and harmony,
