Fish Oil Dosage
Information
Just how much omega-3, fish oil dosage should
you take if you are trying to ease various elements fish oil
supplements are clinically proven to help?
How much should you take for the joint inflammation of
rheumatoid arthritis? To ward off Alzheimer's disease? To alleviate
depression? To ward off heart disease.
Many Americans and others in the United Kingdom,
Australia, New Zealand and Canada are taking more fish oil pills or
supplements than ever before.
The clinical studies validating its usage is
impressive as well.
Good fish oil dosage supplements are purported to
help:
But how much do you need to take? Are there
recommended fish oil dosages? And what about cost?
Let me answer the last question first. The best
fish oil supplement that fulfills your needed fish oil dosage is
only $16.95 for a one-month supply. That's a great deal. Pound for
pound, as it were, fish oil soft gels are the best supplement you
can take as it gives so many health benefits.
The answer as to how much one should take,
though, is not as easily answered.
"The kind of benefits seen in most of the clinical
trials with Omega-3 generally have involved much higher doses than
you see recommended on supplement labels," says Charles Serhan, a
Harvard Medical School, an expert on Omega-3. "But although a large
number of studies have used industrial-level doses," he adds, "we
don't have rigorous scientific evidence about what the doses should
be."
That's a powerful point. It means recommended
dosages could be very small.
In other countries, the research data on the
health benefits of fish oil are very definitive, and they are in
the US as well. There is one study that The federal National
Institutes of Health conducted that was quite revealing.
Fish Oil
Dosages
A number of clinical trials suggest
strongly that well-prepared fish oil can fend off a
variety of health problems, but the omega-3 doses used in the
studies have varied widely.
• Heart disease: 1 gram
or more
• Rheumatoid arthritis: 2
grams or more
• Brain health: 1/2
gram or more
After a large research study conducted over three
years, it was found that taking Omega-3 fatty acids cuts the risk
of death from heart attacks and other cardiovascular causes, can
reduce the joint pain of rheumatoid arthritis and the study says it
"appears" important for proper brain development and function.
Because of news like that, the market for fish-oil
supplements is booming. U.S. omega-3 supplement sales reached an
estimated $600 million last year, up 20% from a year earlier,
Fish oil supplements may be good for you, but
there is a risk. You could get doses of mercury and other toxins
by taking inferior grade fish oil tablets. Due to
that reason the American Heart Association recommends that
people who need to lower triglycerides to ward off heart attacks
take Omega-3 capsules.
You need to confirm that the fish oil you're
buying has been purified to exacting standards. Now, while
there isn't actual pharmaceutical grade fish oil as that standard
has literally been made up by marketers in order to sell their fish
oil product, there are international standards that preserve fish
oil dosages taken. The suggested dose is two to four grams of EPA
and DHA a day, which supplements can provide toxin-free. For
healthy adults seeking merely to cut cardiac risks, the American
Heart Association says eating fatty fish at least twice a week is
probably enough. However, there is a downside to eating so much
fish and this makes taking fish oil soft gels that much more
desirable.
Fish has no fiber. It's not ideal for the
intestinal tract or the colon. It is a "clogging" agent in the
intestinal tract. Granted, fish meat is not nearly as bad for the
human system as cow's meat but it is still meat. I agree with
fitness expert Clarence Bass, author of the bodybuilding book
Ripped, when he said, "Meat should be used as a flavoring
agent, not as the main entree."
So, the best way to get one's Omega-3 fatty acids
is clearly fish oil supplements. Now, that said, what is the best
fish oil dosage to take?
Fish Oil Dosage Recommendations
Some studies recommend the following taken
from variouis rheumatoid-arthritis trials. It indicates that
you need to take more than two grams, perhaps 10 typical capsules,
of Omega-3
fatty acids via a fish oil supplement a day to noticeably curtail
your joint inflammation and pain.
For maintaining brain health, the overall data on
Omega-3's potential are inconclusive, according to the NIH. But a
recent Dutch study showed that about 400 milligrams of EPA and DHA
a day -- which you can get from two typical Omega-3 capsules --
helped elderly individuals maintain mental alacrity. One revealing
point from the study found that the more Omega-3 ingested, the
greater the health benefit.

Best Fish Oil Supplement?
The foregoing will think that is a subjective question but I
don't think so. I will err on the side of clinical research
validation and a Certificate of Analysis (COA) that independently
verifies the purity of the fish oil supplement. Check out this one
company's COA (ppbis parts per billion, ppt is parts per
trillion):

I buy this inexpensive supplement (only $16.95 for one bottle)
that has the highest, certified purity made from the hoki fish and
south Pacific tuna in ocean waters that are pristine. In my
honest opinion, it is the best fish oil supplement on the market.
