Feverfew Herb
The uses of feverfew herb has been used for centuries for treating headaches, arthritis, menstrual problems and a host of other ailments. It grows in Europe and South America and is quite distinctive in its appearance. The yellow and white blossoms of the flower give off a powerful odor that is even used in many gardens throughout the world to repel bees and insects.
BenefitsThere are many uses of feverfew herb. Using feverfew for headaches as well as migraines is a common usage. Key Point: This herb is useful to prevent migraines but it doesn't lessen the actual migraine headache itself. Chief uses of feverfew are:
- Relieves menstrual difficulties. Menstrual cramps occur when the uterine lining produces too much prostaglandin. This hormone causes inflammation. As it limits the release f prostaglandin, feverfew herb eases the menstrual cramps.
- Clinical studies show it works in preventing migraine headaches; feverfew for headaches is a potent elixir. A study done in Great Britain reported a 24% reduction in migraines with feverfew herb while also lessening the intensity of the migraine.
Warnings & Recommendations
Like most herbs found in nature, the feverfew herb is no different. It is powerful but when used to excess causes more harm than good. The daily dosage is approximately 250 mg per day.
Warnings: If you're taking aspirin or any other blood thinner medication, avoid feverfew herb as it may interfer with blood clotting. Side Effects: nausea, irritation of mucous membranes (if the leaves are chewed), rashes, and an upset stomach.
As always, you should discuss with your doctor before embarking on any supplement program -- nursing and/or pregnant women should most likely, however, not take any supplement unless the physician gives their approval.
NOTE: Don't expect immediate relief from migraines. You need to take it consistently for several weeks before feeling its effects.
