What is DMAE?

 

DMAE, or dimethylaminoethanol as it is officially known as, is a compound that is found in high concentrations of anchovies and sardines. It has also been touted by health-food experts as a brain and memory supplement. That statement is part fact, part fiction, which I suppose is par for the course with most supplement companies these days.

It was originally intended to be sold as a medication for studies have shown this new nutrient to be helpful in curbing ADHD-related issues. Also, it was shown to reduce hyperactivity while improved concentration in children with behavior problems and learning disabilities.

Health Benefits of DMAE

This substance won't make you smarter, but it can improve brain chemicals related to concentration and memory. Other benefits of DMAE include its cholinergic capability as it's believed to improve levels of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine.

This type of substance accounts for the making of such cholinergic drugs as it helps treat problems resulting from Alzheimer's disease and other brain-related health issues. Key benefits of DMAE are said to help slow these brain issues, and improve your memory (something never in short supply!).

Side Effects of DMAE

The vast majority of people don't experience any side effects of DMAE. Some of the reactions, though, are confusion, and increase in high blood pressure, drowsiness, headaches, tightness in jaw, neck, shoulders, trapezius muscles, irritability, and insomnia. Be mindful of the fact that no data currently exists that prescribes safe levels for pregnant women and your children. At this point in time, there are no known negative drug interactions with DMAE.

Also, if you are bipolar, have epliepsy, you should avoid DMAE. Before taking any new supplement, it is always safe to talk to your physician first. They can advise you if there are any specifics you should know. Lastly, doctors recommend taking your DMAE supplement with meals for better digestion.

Choosing a Good DMAE Supplement

In order to get the safest DMAE supplement possible, I recommend you buy only pharmaceutical grade quality DMAE. Bear in mind that the supplement industry in the US is unregulated and as such a lot of dietary supplements are overhyped with actual contaminants in them. In fact, the US FDA says 1 out of 5 supplements harbor contaminants.

So, caveat emptor my friend. Another thing you should be aware of is the need of DMAE to be used with other vitamins and minerals. You should take it as part of a multivitamin supplement and not as a standalone supplement. This will save you money and optimize its benefits for you and your family. The benefits are enhanced if taken with vitamin C and the B vitamins -- make sure it has those in it.
