Dandelion Root

Dandelion root is popular throughout the world except perhaps in N. America as it's disregarded as nothing more than an obnoxious weed. In Europe, however, it has literally been used for hundreds of years as a vitamin and mineral supplement. It even takes its name from the French, "dent de lion" which means lion's tooth. The jagged edges of the plants leaves is where the name derives.

Benefits of Dandelion-Root

For many centuries in Europe, dandelion-root has been widely used as an effective laxative. In a Western society where literally half of what most people eat is processed foods, its laxative potential is more needed than ever. However, that is only one of its benefits. The roots and leaves are actually used by herbalists to treat liver problems, including hepatitis and even jaundice, and it also normalizes digestion.

It's also helpful to dissolve gallstones. It also helps to reduce estrogen dominance in endometriosis and breast pain, and the dandelion leaves also help in eliminating fluid retention. Its ability to help eliminate excessive estrogen (the female hormone) in women can help women in not only balancing their hormonal levels but affect their mood swings as well.

In addition, the yellow flower part of dandelion root have therapeutic compounds as well. Researchers say all parts of the dandelion root have an abundance of choline, selenium, calcium, vitamins A, C, E, and phosphorus. It also has a very unique type of natural occurring insulin found in the root.

Its efficacy is still being studied. Probably most noteworthy, yet speculative, about dandelion supplements or dandelion root is that it's even been touted and is currently being researched for alleged cancer prevention and curing properties, specifically breast cancer and tumors.

Types of Dandelion-Root Supplements: Dandelion Supplement Forms

Dandelion root is sold not only as a single supplement but it's also in many herbal combination formulas, chiefly liver health products and fat metabolizing formulas as well. This plant/herb is not only found in tablet or capsule form, but also as a tincture and as a herbal tea. Some even put it in salads but we personally advise against this (as I've done it) for no other reason other than it is bitter tasting. It is edible in this manner, however.
