Damiana Herb

Damiana herb has been used for thousands of years and its therapeutic benefits. It has even been traced back to the ancient Mayans who used it as a tonic, diuretic, stimulant, and as an aphrodisiac. What is this herb? It is a small shrub that has leaves that are smooth and pale green . It is native to Mexico, South America, the American state of Texas (southern regions mostly) and even in the Caribbean.

It was first introduced to the U.S. in 1874 as a general tonic.

The leaf is where the medicinal active constituent ingredients reside. It smell is reminiscent of chamomile and is greenish in color. Additionally, this herb plant goes by many names including, pastorata, old woman's broom, and oreganello.

Damiana Benefits

The herb has been used primarily as a sexual aphrodisiac, but it's also been known to work directly with the human genitalia and related organs for helping to minimize and even alleviate the symptoms of female menopause. However, its secondary uses include diuretic properties, as an anti-depressant; it also helps with anxiety, with type 1 diabetes, and even as a general purgative.

Its main use is clearly that is acts directly on the reproductive organs, though. At this juncture, the scientific community has not rigorously studied damiana. However, some studies do exist.

The essential oil from damiana leaves is found to have substances known as terpenes. Some research suggests terpenes, along with other substances, actually make up the sexual communication chemicals -- pheromones.

Scientific studies have not been done to show any causative link between this herb with pheromone production in humans, though The most evocative scientific evidence purporting it for libido enhancement was conducted that showed damiana extract actually somehow connects progesterone (female hormone) receptor in post-menopause women, increasing their sex drive or maintaining it.

At this point, more clinical studies need to be done. (It is a libido enhance for both men and women, proponents say.) As its oils are applied to sexual areas, the constituents of the damiana leaf are believed to produce exciting tingling and lubricating sensations, which is perhaps why its power as a libido aid has risen in popularity. While most of the power of the herb is anecdotal, its long history of usage warrant at the least personal experimentation.

Pecautions & Guidelines

Damiana-leaf can actually work as a mild laxative and does have purported stool-softening effects. In addition, high dosages of damiana-herb actually are believed to cause euphoria. As it's not been studied extensively, pregnant and/or nursing mothers should avoid taking it. Also, anyone who has a serious medical condition or is under prescription medication should avoid it as well. Consult with your doctor first before using it. Overall, it does appear to be a safe herb when used wisely. As it's such a versatile herb, it is used in various forms, as a tablet, cream, tincture, as well as a sublingual (under the tongue) spray.
