Biotin Info
Biotin is a member of the B complex vitamins, but it still plays a vital role in many body
processes. It is Vitamin B8 and it known as the "energy and beauty nutrient." It actually gets its name from the Greek word bios, which
means "life." Most people rarely have a deficiency of this vitamin as it's found in rice, bananas, carrots, nuts, oatmeal, cauliflower -- common
staple foods in Western society.
Deficiency leads to hair loss, dermatitis, and high blood cholesterol levels. In order to achieve heightened capability, supplementation is
necessary for vitamin biotin as it is found in many foods.
Benefits
So, what does this vitamin specifically do? It has a vital role serving as a enabler in the body for it to use glucose (blood sugar) properly,
thus helping diabetes sufferers. It also is important in the production of key enzymes, which play a critical if not under appreciated role in
facilitating chemical metabolic processes within the body like digestion. It also assists the body in the metabolizing of protein, carbohydrates,
and fats as well as in the proper functioning of the nervous and cardiovascular systems.
Some unscrupulous vitamin companies claim it can also prevent male pattern baldness, but this is a dubious, unverified claim.
Hair loss could be stopped, though, if the hair loss is due to the lack of biotin in the system but
this is unlikely. However, vitamin biotin does contribute toward healthy skin, nails, and hair overall. Some secondary
benefits also include helping the bad cholesterol levels (LDL) and alleviating fatigue although the effects are negligible.
Precautions
While there are no known side effects to Biotin as it is an essential nutrient to the body, if you're going to increase your daily dosage of
the vitamin biotin through supplementation, we recommend first consulting with your doctor. According to the U.S. government, you need 30 micrograms per day minimum.
If, however, you are taking it to enhance your health, some experts recommend taking 1,000 micrograms per day. However, there is an important
caveat here: there is still very little info as to what is a safe, maximum dose of the vitamin biotin. One last comment for this section.
One notable cause of vitamin-biotin levels was linked to raw egg whites consumption over an extended period of time. So, if possible, limit
your egg white consumption and/or take a multivitamin supplement.
Choose Quality Vitamin Supplements
A therapeutic dosage of biotin can be attained through supplementation, but if you choose to take a multivitamin, we recommend taking it with a supplement that has multiple nutrients as this will save you money as well as
optimizing the power of the various nutrients as they work synergistically together. The following criteria is what we recommend you
follow when selecting this vitamin as well as in taking supplements in general. The first thing to bear in mind is that it should be a complete
and scientifically formulated supplement.
1. The supplements should be produced at pharmaceutical standard GMP registered facilities. GMP registered facilities comply with the
strictest standards so as to minimize the possibility of contaminants. Nutritional supplements are not regulated by FDA and as such
such fraud is rampant with many so-called supplements containing contaminants with 1 in 5 not
having the ingredients as proclaimed on the label!
2. Ensure the supplement manufacturer has a Certificate of Analysis (COA) on file for review by you the customer thus confirming the
potency of the herbal ingredients listed on the label.
Quality Biotin
I have found a company that meets the criteria above in New Zealand. We mention New Zealand deliberately for this country has one of the
most rigid regulatory standards they must adhere to in the world. Dietary supplements in New Zealand undergo the same exact certification
standards as in the U.S. for pharmaceutical medications.
In fact, their standards surpass the FDA. Their multivitamin supplement product has over 70 vitamins, minerals, enzymes, trace and
specialty nutrients, and herbal extracts (including the vitamin biotin) to form a comprehensive supplement.
I have been taking this supplement a little over two years and have experienced wonderful results including more energy and a good, overall
sense of well being.
Yours in health, hope, and harmony,
