Apple cider vinegar has been used for thousands of years by many touting it as a panacea for almost every ailment imaginable. In fact, it was used by the Egyptians, the Romans, and the Babylonians as far back as 3,000 B.C. Even the father of medicine, Hippocrates, treated his patients with apple cider vinegar.
In modern times, famed naturopath and herbalist Dr. John Christopher recommended it in many vegetarian recipes and took it daily. The inevitable question, however, that is brought up about apple cider vinegar tablets is inevitably, "But just what are the health benefits of apple cider vinegar?"
Apple cider vinegar tablets have been touted as diet aids and even as a bodybuilding supplement, but where's the fact and the fiction? Let's talk about what we do know and we'll let you decide what decision you want to make regarding apple cider vinegar tablets or capsules.

Health Benefits of Apple Cider VinegarSo, what are the health benefits of apple cider vinegar tablets? Proponents affirm that research validates its cleansing properties, claiming it is an aid to digestion by helping to stimulate the flow of enzymes that are in the saliva in the mouth (the mouth is actually the first step of digestion). The health benefits of apple cider vinegar tablets also purportedly include:
- The acidity and enzymes in it are supposedly supportive of a health scalp and give your hair a lustrous shine.
- It can be used an emollient and is purported to be good for the skin and has been used as a facial key ingredient, for exfoliating dry and dead skin, and for clearing up non-cystic acne.
- It is believed to help relieve muscle pain after intense exercise.
- It is believed to help balance pH levels.
- It is supposedly good for the heart and is believed to be of help in lowering cholesterol and is good for general heart health.
- It is believed it is a natural cleanser, antibiotic, and antiseptic, fighting germs and bacteria.
- Is believed to be a blood thinner and blood builder.
In addition, according to an article in the New Zealand Herald, New Zealand's largest newspaper, health food maverick and naturopathic doctor, Dr. Patricia Bragg, apple cider vinegar liquid (as opposed to apple cider vinegar tablets), must have antioxidant properties as well as she says it is a key ingredient for longevity. So, what is the truth? Are these claims legitimate?
My best answer is that there is no research or clinical data to prove apple cider vinegar tablets work or have merit.
My Opinion: Apple cider vinegar tablets are useless. There is no evidence that we could find that says apple cider vinegar tablets give these benefits. There are no peer reviewed, scientific publications information on the health benefits of apple cider vinegar tablets.
However, we also believe that results are more important than academic studies. We actually read recently an article that says, "Consuming a diet that is high in fruits and vegetables seems to reduce the risk of heart attack and strokes, but not cancer, according to a report in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute."
That's the lead paragraph in an article entitled, "Fruits and Veggies No Help Against Cancer." as dated Tuesday, November, 2004 from the Reuters UK. . However, tell that to Rudy Tomjanovich the former Houston Rocket basketball team coach in the US who overcame bladder cancer by, according to the San Francisco Chronicle in their October 21, 2004 issue,
"He ate only raw vegetables for two months, dropped nearly 30 pounds and had trouble filling out his clothes. Still, he felt like a person reborn."(Article written by Janny Hu. Pg. D1).
Or tell that to Dr. Lorraine Day who overcame breast cancer by a natural diet of ... you guessed it fruits, vegetables, and grains. Or tell it to Tom S. of Alton, Illinois who was diagnosed with Stage IV cancer of the lymph system who cured himself of a diet of fruits and vegetables and using the VitaMixer to make his meals. I think you get the idea.
The qualifications and service of doctors Bragg and Christopher have some weight with us as they have been instrumental by their example as to the efficacy of using apple cider vinegar on a daily basis. (Dr. Christopher died in 1983 at the age of 74. Incidentally, at the age of 35, he couldn't get a life insurance policy due to ill health and had rheumatoid arthritis and was told he'd be dead before he was 40 due to his various health conditions.) So, does apple cider vinegar work? I believe it does, but avoid the tablets.

What are some of the health benefits of apple cider vinegar that while not proven by clinical trials do have merit at least anecdotally? Apple cider vinegar helps improve digestion, helps improve the immune system, has strong antioxidant properties, is a good source of potassium and as such good for muscles including the heart, and seems very capable of helping to lower blood pressure and removing bad cholesterol (LDL) from the system.
Bottom line: Apple cider vinegar tablets are a waste of money, but apple cider vinegar like found at www.bragg.com is good for you. If you're looking for a panacea though to every health problem imaginable including a miracle weight loss agent or bodybuilding edge, look elsewhere. I take apple cider vinegar if not daily routinely and even make our own salad dressings with it as it's healthier and cheaper to do so.
